Stay cool: Tips to beat the summer heat
Summer brings rising temperatures and can have us breaking a sweat. So, to beat the heat and stay healthy, we asked our Bright Naturopath, Dr. Taylor Blixt, for some tips:
1. Stay hydrated:
Remember to drink plenty of fluids on warm days. Aim for more than 2L of water on the real hot days like today! Also, try to avoid/limit beverages that dehydrate you such as coffee and alcohol.
2. Drink electrolytes:
These essential minerals are lost when we sweat more but drinking water that has electrolytes can help prevent low levels of these minerals in the body. Coconut water, or even adding a pinch of salt to your water, are also great ways to keep your electrolyte levels up.
3. Look out for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke and know how to manage them:
If you notice headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea and/or vomiting while outside, you may be experiencing heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Make sure to get to a cooler place (i.e., in the shade), rehydrate with water, and lie down with legs raised. Reduce core body temperatures by applying cold clothes and using a fan. If the core body temperature does not lower or there is loss of consciousness, EMS services should be contacted.
